Quilting Blog
The Miriam-Webster Dictionary defines ‘quilt’ as: bed coverlet of two layers of cloth filled with padding (such as down or batting) held in place by ties or stitched designs.
Its etymology as a noun notes that it is from Middle English quilte mattress, quilt, from Anglo-French coilte, from Latin culcita mattress. Its first known use was in the 14th century. But something seems to be missing. Where is the description of using fabric scraps from well-worn pieces of clothing? Where is the image of quilting bees as social gatherings for hard-working farm women? Where is the feeling of love that is sewn with each stitch? While a dictionary can give a basic definition of a word, it certainly can’t touch upon all the connotations that the word ‘quilt’ brings to mind…from those who complete this activity, to those who admire. In conclusion, remember…a fat quarter is not a body part! February 27, 2023 |
